The Amazing Changes in China’s Economy
With the Olympics holding our attention so dramatically, those opening exercises were a demonstration of a very strong china economy. And if you have paid attention to the how things have been going around the world economically lately, it is easy to see that China has been on the move increasing in economic power at a phenomenal rate. So its worth our while to pay attention to what is happening in China because it affects us here a great deal.
In fact, what goes on in China economically can have a huge impact on the world economy as well. The obvious example is oil prices. As China has become more economically active, they have begun to consume more oil and that demand has affected prices around the world. We have felt that pinch dramatically here at home so much so that this economic change has become an important issue to our presidential candidates.
When the ripple effect of the China economy can get the attention of the most powerful people on the planet, that is something worth noting. And the reach of the economic fingers of China is so vast that we probably are not aware how much of our daily lives are part of China’s expansion. From credit cards to mortgage ownership to buying up many of our public buildings and infrastructure, China has reached into our country and around the world with their economic power.
But it is a mistake to isolate china because the changes are really part of something that is going on in the world economy as well. In a way, it is a victory of our economic system because we are seeing many countries around the world from the Middle East to India to China and even Russia beginning to adopt principles of capitalism that have always been hallmarks of the way markets work in a free economic system. And as those countries realize the benefits that capitalism can do for them, they begin to flex their economic muscle as we have seen China do especially in the last decade.
The chances are that we are going to continue to see a lot of change both in the China economy and in how their society works as a result of the rise in living standards that capitalism has brought them. In fact, as China realizes a real “middle class”, they may see both social and political pressures that the Communist government won’t like. That will be when, as they say, “the rubber will hit the road.”
The best thing we can do is to see the changes in the world economy in the light of real opportunity more so than as something to be unhappy about. We are the ones who are well experienced in capitalism and our entrepreneurs are the envy of the world. If we give our business people and our workers a chance to get into these new economic markets and really compete, we will show off what we are capable of doing. Then we will capture some of that business back that we may have lost in the last ten years. The world learned capitalism from us. So let’s show them how its done.
